Biography
You were born in Stetterick in Dhurghumlund, a small mining and logging community near Pen Duras (see map), the son of Boromir and Helgranda. Unlike your parents and two brothers, you were never really interested in mining and yearned for a more interesting life.
The one thing of curious interest in Stetterick (a small place with a church to Pelor, an inn and then farms and small homes) was a statue of ‘Noble Sirrick’. The large iron statue outside of the church depicts a dragon armed with a sword and shield. This was apparently the protector of Stetterick that lived in the mountains (although nobody had seen any dragon for more than 75 years, so whether this is just legend or not is unknown) and watched over the village.
Nevertheless, the idea of such things only served to increase your wanderlust and you headed for Pen Duras and, from there, a 10 week boat trip to Karubai.
Travelling east to some of the mountainous regions, you got involved with some skirmishes against trolls and learned how to handle a sword quite well.
Unfortunately, though, you were not prepared for the sort of mercenary groups that you fell in with. Battles were not as frequent or difficult as they had been in years passed and drinking and gambling (organised by a shifty elven merchant – or so he said – named Senharias) became more important than the battles and your dreams of adventure were slowly forgotten.
Growing disillusioned and owing Senharias 1500GP, you left the borderlands and stumbled around a few townships, gambling and slumming, increasing your debts and then running before paying. After some time, you entered Wesland, the country west of Karubai and a long-time enemy of it (though presently not at war).
Political events were occurring rapidly here and in the scurrilous company you kept, it seemed that the king of Wesland’s days were numbered and that the Lord Protector would soon be in command.
But this would not be a new place for you to slip further because Senharias was not prepared to let you get away with the 1500GP you owed him. It would set a bad example; you discovered that a small bounty was on your head and you finally sobered up and came to your senses.
‘Home’, you thought. Go home and start again – the madness of these lands could wait; there was plenty of adventure to find back in Dhurghumlund. Your last few coins bought passage back to Pen Duras and from there you travelled to Stetterick, taking a route around the woods to remind yourself of the terrain and come into the village from the south, near where your parents lived, after some 10 years away.
But nothing was as it had been.
The village was almost entirely destroyed and you found the remains of your parents’ bodies, apparently torn apart. You ran into the village in shock and came across the body of one of your brothers, Thorin, still alive but fading. He indicated in vague gestures the major mine entrance.
Without checking with Cornelius, the village cleric and nominal leader, or anybody else, your grief led you recklessly to the mines. You remember spying a werewolf and a wizard and followed them as they descended into the mines, destroying a few zombies on their way (since when were undead here?). Your memory gets hazy now – you followed the werewolf to some passages (that you had never known about in the mines before) and through a door they left ajar. Did they know you were following them? On you went, down some stairs and then you vaguely remember seeing your father. Then nothing. You feel like your head’s full of wool and can’t make anything out or move any limbs…..
