Biography
Pyrrisuva, pronounced Pirisoova and usually abbreviated to Suva (although Suva himself prefers Su when addressed by close family and friends), was born in Yakstra, a semi-autonomous remote region of Karubai, which has a mixed Elven (predominant) and Human (minority) population. The people of Yakstra tend to be thought of throughout the rest of Karubai as a bit backward and country-bumpkinish although they are hardy and self-reliant (think Cornwall in the early 1800s). Yakstra has always been semi-autonomous - generally because the emperors couldn't be arsed to enforce heavy-handed state government due to the remoteness of the region and the sparse population - but the people have held on fiercely to their independence if ever a challenge was seen. All this has changed, of course, now that Noon Hirani IV is on the Karubai throne!
Suva was born to Davul and Finnuala Yurdaak in the reign of the old emperor (Noon Hirani IVs father). It was not a happy household. Davul, a merchant by trade, had travelled beyond the borders of Yakstra more than many of his countrymen. He was (is?) an intelligent and charismatic Elf and his trading had made him wealthy. In the years after Suva's birth he became more and more involved in local government and at the time of his leaving he was an important member of the high council of Yakstra. He was (is?) a strange mixture of principled local leader and unprincipled (dodgy!) merchant. In later years the local leader became the dominant part of his personality.
Finnuala comes from a family of wealthy Karubains who (unusually) moved to Yakstra only two generations ago (for a peaceful life it has been said) and her family were still seen as outsiders until she married into Yurdaak family. Finnuala is a realist and loved her wheeler-dealer merchant husband unconditionally. The principled local leader he became, however, infuriated Finnuala beyond measure. She found him earnest beyond belief and lacking in humour.
Davul and Finnuala had three sons, each very different in character and outlook.
Baal, the first-born, adored and worshipped his father. Davul could do no wrong. Baal accompanied his father to meetings in the council chamber and was being groomed by Davul to carry on in his footsteps. Finnuala dismissed Baal as a 'chip off the old block, while he was still young (16) and found him almost as irritating as his father. She also lamented his complete antipathy toward work. "You will find, my lad, that principles and meetings do not put bread on the table". Baal assumed his wealthy family would always keep him!
At the time of his father's leaving Baal was 20 years old.
Kukrimn, the youngest, is entirely opposite. He is the archetypal mummies boy. A cunning little twat, he fawned and sucked up to his mother so she showered him with love and gifts. Suva always suspected that Kukrimn would never get a job either but that his mother would not mind quite so much.
At the time of his father's leaving Kukrimn was 16 years old.
Suva is the middle son. He displayed none of his father's love of government and leadership being very disinterested. He never shared his mother's annoyance either. He was viewed by both of his brothers as someone who sat on the fence and had no views on anything; although both enjoyed his company and he enjoyed theirs.

STRIFE
Davul began his interest and career in local government when his eldest son was about 8 years old and his youngest still a baby. The vicious rows began a year later. Finnuala saw her exciting husband turn into a boring politician and gave him the benefit of her sharp tongue on a daily basis. As Baal and Kukrimn got older they joined in, supporting their favourite parent. Suva stayed out of all of the arguments and retreated into a world of books and legends. He became knowledgeable and was seen by his classmates at school as a bit of a bookworm. He grew strong, however, and was proficient in jousting and tournaments - a tradition dating back many years in Yakstra. He preferred the Yakstran mace to traditional elven weapons and wielded it well. He was never popular, though; just respected. He could never be relied upon to enjoy mischief at school as he had an inbuilt sense of doing the right thing and it settled on his conscience if injustice, or even perceived injustice occurred. He was forever defending the class runts!!
The arguments at home became worse (never physical as far as Suva could tell but he was not sure). Suva was sure, though, that they would stay together if only because Davul needed a wife for his political career and Finnuala enjoyed the money!
As Suva grew older he developed a keen interest in religion. He tried following many of the elven gods without feeling that he belonged. Not long before his father's leaving he discovered St Cuthbert. The philosophy of Cuthbert appealed immediately to his sense of fair-play and he began, secretly, to be a follower (not easy in Yakstra). Cuthbert's followers did not care for politics or endless arguing and this suited Suva fine.
THE NEW EMPEROR
In Suva's mid teenage years the old emperor died and Noon Hirani IV, who had effectively been emperor for two decades as his father's life waned, came to the throne. The people of Yakstra were as ambivalent as ever about a change in emperor as it did not seem to ever affect them much. He heard rumblings from his father over the next couple of years but his interest in affairs of state and government was small and he didn't even know whether his father was a supporter or not of the new emperor.
One morning when Suva was 19 Finnuala called her sons into the lounge of their house and told them that their father had been called to the capital of Karubai as the new emperor wanted all of the brightest minds of his country to be a part of his government. He had left in secret in the middle of the night so as to avoid upsetting his children.
Baal openly wept and from that day forth was a broken figure. Kukrimn shrugged, Suva frowned and asked when he would return. Finnuala said it would be many years and that they should get on with their lives ("and you can get a bloody job and begin to support your family" she said to her eldest).
Three months later Baal left the house and went in search of his father.
Three months after that Suva left the house to travel to the capital of Karubai and attempt to join the main temple of the order of St Cuthbert.
Kukrimn stayed.
RECENTLY
Suva was a gifted novice and quickly became a junior cleric. His early adventures (pretty tame really) enabled him to progress quickly and he reached a point when he wanted to go further out into the world and do the work of Cuthbert elsewhere. Although he often thought of his family (and wondered why no-one in the capital of Karubai had ever heard of his father) he was a devoted servant of Cuthbert and this was his overriding motivation.
His willingness to travel further afield was probably why he accepted the mission from his abbott, despite the nagging doubts that had begun to form. As he travelled to Pen Duras, however, the doubts grew and he became very uneasy.
He tried to think about his doubts but they just brought more questions to his mind.
